“ Drawing Diary” series is Kwak’s most intimate body of work, created as a response to the language barriers and resulting frustrations she experienced upon first arriving in the United States. During that time, Kwak recorded her daily thoughts and emotions through drawing, marking each work with the date to signify personal time. About ten years later, she revisited these stacked Drawing Diaries, cutting and collaging interconnected images into new compositions. This process gave rise to the Times Composed series, which reinterprets the relationships between events, emotions, and visual language at specific moments.
The Times Composed series reconstructs the continuity of time, allowing images created at different moments to intersect and generate new visual dimensions and resonances. Through this, viewers can trace the arc of her life in the U.S. at a glance. These collaged archives extend beyond mere personal documentation, serving as a source of inspiration for Kwak’s large-scale works.
